I love how art has the ability to evoke an emotion, and there’s no denying that @petecromer‘s art brings a sense of happiness and positivity. Based in the Colac Otway region of Victoria, Pete Cromer is renowned for his signature bursts of colour and layered texture – a sure way to brighten any space.
Could you tell us a bit about your background and the path that led to your current artistic endeavours?
As I grew up I always knew I wanted to have a career in the creative industry. I studied graphic design at University and worked in the design landscape for about 10 years before throwing it all in to focus on my own art. It was a scary decision, but I am so glad I did.
What inspires you to create your art?
I am heavily inspired by the personality in things, whether it’s a cheeky bird or the happiness and positivity I see in people. It gives me a lift. I like to explore these emotions and personalities using colour and shape to convey it. My process can be time consuming as it uses paper cuts to layer work, but I find this to be a very meditative place. If what I create can put a smile on someone’s face, then the artwork is doing what it is meant to be doing!

Can you tell us one of your favourite artists?
I’m drawn to artist that use colour in amazing ways. I adore the works of James Jean and Todd James (REAS) both artists that have an amazing eye for exciting colour combinations that create wonderful and gorgeous works.
Describe your dream home and location.
My dream home would be full of warmth, natural woods, a stone fireplace….like a wood cabin. I like quiet spaces, so a place down in the Otway’s amongst trees would be my idea of heaven.
Do you have artwork displayed in your home? What kind?
I have a marvellous print by my fave James Jean. It’s a bit spesh 🙂 I’m waiting till I own my first home before I really start collecting artwork. I have expensive taste so it will probably grow very slowly over my lifetime.
Name one item in your home that you could not do without.
It’s gotta be the fridge! Food and wine lives in there, lol!
When you’re not creating masterpieces, where would we find you?
If it’s early morning I will be in the gym; if it’s during the day I will be at home doing admin and business things; if it’s at night I’ll be eating something delicious and obviously bad! And if I can somehow manage a good spare hour, I’ll be playing a video game!
