Time to turn our attention to the main bathrooms of each home and I’ve got to say, bathrooms would have to be one of our favourite rooms to design. With the layout of these rooms squared away back at the planning stage, it’s time to create two different takes on the one design. Natural light and ventilation is always at the forefront of our minds in a bathroom – and the addition of the opening Velux skylights and the Wideline Paragon window frame (with fluted glass) are the first to be installed. We’ve framed the skylights to create a light void and it’s going to create a sense of grandeur when you walk in – even at framing stage it looks good!
Next up, it’s Gyprock time and in the wet areas we’ve used AquaChek™ 10mm plasterboard, which is the perfect lining for residential wet area application. One thing we aim to include in all our new bathrooms is Hotwire Underfloor Heating. We were first introduced to Hotwire 10 years ago during our time on The Block where we used Hotwire in our whole downstairs apartment and absolutely loved the level of comfort and warmth it provides. During winter, we have our bathroom floors at home on a timer and it’s often the only heating we have on. It’s more cost effective than you might expect, and for us it’s a must – especially in a bathroom of this calibre.
With our tile and bathroomware selections made well in advance (hello lengthy council delays) it’s SO good to see the tiles onsite and ready to go! In both bathrooms I’m using 1200x1200mm Rocksalt tiles from Beaumont Tiles. In House 1 we’re using the Rocksalt ‘White Gold’ and in House 2, the Rocksalt ‘Danish Smoke’. I just love a large format tile in a bathroom; for me the look is sophisticated and seamless, and from a functional point of view there is less grout to clean! Each bathroom will have a smaller feature tile – in House 1 this will run along the window wall and in House 2, behind the vanity.
For the vanities, Edstein Stone have crafted amazing Cosentino Dekton integrated basins that have a similar vibe to the ensuites. In House 1, we’re using Cosentino Dekton ‘Marmorio’ and in House 2 Cosentino Dekton ‘Grigio’. They’ll be sitting above custom ‘Keys’ timber vanities by Loughlin Furniture, House 1 in American Oak Light, and House 2 in Aged American Oak.
Moving into the second bedrooms, it is all about the bedroom wall colour! I’ve used these Big Paint Sample swatches (which have been a gamechanger for this build!) to narrow down my selections in each room. In House 1, I’ve used a gorgeous ceramic handmade vase as inspriation for the wall colour and I’m playing on the soft lilac colour with the bed styling. I’ve locked in Taubmans Endure ‘Reverie’ in a low sheen finish for walls, and keeping all the trims the same colour but finishing in the Water Based Semi-Gloss Enamel. In House 2, I’ve selected Taubmans Endure ‘Willow Gum’ in the low sheen, and again keeping all the trims in the same colour but finishing in the Water Based Enamel in a Semi-Gloss. The Taubmans Water Based Enamel has been specifically designed to protect doors, trims, skirting boards and windows and provides a smooth, washable and abrasion resistant finish.
Moving into the office, this space has become our ‘bonus room’. On our original plans, we didn’t actually have doors, but once the walls were up we realised that it was quite a substantial space! The addition of doors meant it could be a much more practical (and quiet) room, as opposed to the original office ‘nook’ which was quite open to the living room void. The Corinthian Doors ‘Manhattan BHAT 8GC’ doors are they are quite the statement as you look down the hallway, mirroring the black arch window frames at the opposite end. Another feature within these office spaces is the Velux skylight positioned in the centre of the room. It adds so much natural light and I’m sure the new owners will be loving the light in this space for their future zoom calls.
